Reimagining Urban Spaces in Central Ninth
Welcome to the MeadUp Underpass Project! We're excited to transform the space under the West Temple freeway overpass into a vibrant community plaza. Our vision is to create a welcoming, functional, and aesthetically pleasing area that serves the diverse needs of our Central Ninth neighborhood and creates healthy and happy community.

About the MeadUp Project

Central Ninth is a neighborhood in motion, rapidly redeveloping with a growing mix of housing, innovative startups, and small businesses that reflect the energy of urban living. This transformation presents a unique opportunity to reimagine our shared spaces and strengthen community connections.

For too long, the West Temple off-ramp has divided our neighborhood and left behind an underused, unsightly area. The new plaza under the overpass will transform that space into a vibrant public destination designed for connection, recreation, and relaxation.

When completed, the project will feature two futsal courts, a dog park called the “Zoomie Zone,” outdoor ping pong tables, public gathering areas, landscaping, and enhanced lighting. Together, these elements will create a safe and welcoming space for residents and visitors alike.

This community-driven effort is made possible through funding from Salt Lake City’s Community Reinvestment Agency (CRA) and generous contributions from local donors, showing what is possible when public investment and neighborhood passion come together. The project will enhance the shared identity of both the Central Ninth and Ballpark neighborhoods, turning a long-neglected area into a new centerpiece of urban life.
A special thanks to Utah Department of Transportation, Real Salt Lake, Rise Athletic Foundation, Nick Rimando, Paul Svedsen, Central Ninth Development Partners, Big Tobacco Holding Co., Salt Lake City Community Reinvestment Agency, SLC Love Your Block Program, and the many volunteers who made this project possible.
