What is the Harvey Milk Visibility Project?
The Harvey Milk Visibility Project aims to honor and uplift the legacy of Harvey Milk, an iconic figure in the LGBTQ+ rights movement, by increasing the visibility and representation of Utah’s LGBTQ+ community. The project aims to build public art and educational initiatives along Harvey Milk Blvd., also known as 900 South, in Salt Lake City.
Key components of the project are a series of banners and art pieces that celebrate local LGBTQ+ artists, historical figures, and leaders. By raising awareness of LGBTQ+ history and issues, the Harvey Milk Visibility Project plays a crucial role in promoting equality and celebrating diversity in Salt Lake City and beyond.
Equality Utah and Salt Lake City leaders started this project back in 2016 with the renaming of 900 South to Harvey Milk Blvd. Equality Utah chose the street because of its historical ties to the gay, lesbian, transgender, and queer communities. In 2023, the Central Ninth Community Council and East Liberty Park Community Organization worked with Equality Utah to seek funding for projects along the street and an award of $30,000 for infrastructure was granted by the Salt Lake City Council.
The Harvey Milk Project now seeks community support and donations to hire artists and designers to create meaningful LGBTQ+ art and information on the infrastructure the city is building. Help be a part of the legacy of Harvey Milk and create a cultural area that reflects our community by donating today.
